Nov 28, 2019Blog, Ice Dams, Roofing

Whether you’re hiring professionals for snow removal or doing it yourself (not recommended), we’re listing the things to watch out for and have created a list of Do’s and Don’ts.

Do’s:

  • Start from the edges and move your way to the top
  • Be mindful of metal tools during a removal process – (Avoiding power lines)
  • Use plastic tools such as snow rakes
  • Clear areas near fire escapes, emergency /egress windows, ventilation openings
  • Contact a roofing professional if the snow buildup is a concern to the safety of you and your home

Don’ts:

  • First and foremost – if you are unsure how or where to begin when removing snow from your roof, avoid doing it yourself
  • Do not try to melt the snow or ice on your roof with an open flame or devices that allow you to do so
  • Do not use a typical ladder to lift yourself up on the roof – there are specialized ladders that are used primarily by professionals to remove snow
  • Avoid creating a snow pile on your roof – this only creates concentrated weight and runoff can overflow your gutter system

If you’re hesitant to remove snow from your roof, call a trusted professional. Don’t risk your safety or the safety of your home this winter season.
